However, gaining a new audience on a medium like Twitter can seem like a challenge. No matter how many users you tweet to, or how great the content you’re sharing is, it can be difficult to grab attention and pique curiosity with the same audience.

Trending Topics

One fun and easy way to expose your tweets to new users, and potentially gain more followers, is to participate in a trending topic on Twitter. Topics begin to officially trend when there’s a large number of users tweeting about a topic – although there’s no official number that determines what counts as a trend. Usually, trends only last about 5-11 minutes at a time, but if you can incorporate one into your tweets when they’re at their peak, you can grab the attention of users who are following, and, if you happen to strike gold with one that’s exceptionally funny or meaningful, you might be able to catch yourself some new followers.

How can you see what’s trending on Twitter? When you log in to the platform (as opposed to JugnooMe), you will see 10 current trends, either with or without a hashtag. Or, if you would like a more specific overview, you can click on ‘Discover’ to see articles and topics that are trending in your area, or across Twitter, along with a brief description. There are a number of tools available online too, but if you’re simply looking to spice up your usual tweets, that might not be necessary.

Do It Right

Now that you know about trending topics, you’re almost set to start experimenting with incorporating them into your Twitter content, but remember that, just like anything online, there can be drawbacks if they’re done improperly. Just keep the following points in mind and you’ll be amazing new and old followers alike with your grasp of the hottest trends.

Think outside the box. Just because a trend doesn’t appear to be relevant to your business doesn’t mean you should avoid it entirely. Take a moment, and see if you find a way to incorporate it with a current promotion or product. Sometimes participating in the most irreverent trend can set you apart from your competitors, exposing your Twitter account to a new audience that may just contain your next customer… and surprising your current followers with your ingenuity.

Research Counts

Do your research first. Sometimes, the reason for a trend on Twitter isn’t immediately obvious. Exercise caution and take a minute or two to find out why that person, place or word is at the top of trend list. Trends aren’t always based on gossip or humour – sometimes they can be the result of very serious issues. If you post a tweet without considering the origin of the trend or adopting an appropriate tone, you run the risk of offending your followers and attracting attention for all the wrong reasons, so be sure to know what the fuss is about before you weigh in.

Be Professional

Professionalism is always trendy. A number of trends are just downright embarrassing, and while they might make you snort a little from the safety of the other side of the screen, that doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea for you to tweet that #WhyYoWeave hashtag – even if you’re a wig supply company. A good rule to remember is that if you wouldn’t joke about it to a major client over a lunch meeting, then it may not be a good idea to tweet about it on Twitter.

Twitter trends are an easy way to help you come up with creative, clever content for your Twitter feed and keep things fresh. Just remember that, like in any form of social media communication, a little caution, research and professionalism can go a long way toward ensuring that your followers will find your unique perspective on trends as amusing, and worthy of sharing, as you do.
